Whoever said April showers, bring May flowers was undoubtedly talking about Portland. Yes, we still get a lot of rain in the spring, but boy, does the city bloom over the next few months.
Unlike in other parts of the country, our rain showers tend to be lighter and shorter and shouldn’t hamper your Portland plans. Leave the umbrella at home and pack a rain jacket and hoodie, and you’ll be good to go for all these fun April festivals and local events.
When visiting Portland this spring, here are a few things you should check out:
Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival
Through May 5 | www.woodenshoe.com
Now in its 39th year, the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival is a perennial PNW favorite. Every year, it celebrates the arrival of spring with a magnificent display of tulip fields. The festival includes more than just the tulip display. There are weekly special events, hot air balloon rides, and flowers for sale. Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind PNW event!
See The Cherry Blossoms
March – April
It’s cherry blossom season! Some of the best places to view these famed blossoms are the Japanese historical plaza downtown, Cathedral Park, and the Japanese Gardens at Washington Park. Peak bloom season is late March to early April, so be sure to time your visit accordingly!
Pizza Week
April 15-21 | Portland Mercury
Every April, Portland Mercury hosts Pizza Week. This year the event will be held April 15-21, and over 30 participating shops will offer $3 pizza slices and $24 pies. Foodies rejoice! This is a great time to sample all the delicious pizza joints around town. Follow @portlandmercury on Instagram for more details on participating vendors for the week-long celebration.
Portland Saturday Market
Every Saturday | www.portlandsaturdaymarket.com
Spend a Saturday morning at the Portland Saturday Market. This long-running market (celebrating its 50th Anniversary This Year!) is a haven for local products and arts. Local makers, musicians, and artisans showcase handcrafted products each week. Come for the arts and crafts, stay for the gourmet and locally produced foods. The market runs every Saturday from March through December.
Oregon Cheese Festival
April 27-28 | www.oregoncheesefestival.com
Round out the end of the month with more cheese than you can dream of. The Oregon Cheese Festival returns with wine, chocolate, gourmet foods, and, of course, CHEESE! Tickets to the festival are $25 in advance and $35 at the door. Visit The Oregon Cheese Festival for more information and tickets.
