There’s always something going on in Salem, Oregon! These days it’s construction! So much construction!

As Oregon’s state capital, the region is always bustling with activity. Whether it’s outdoor recreation, theatre, or sporting events, there is no shortage of great things to do. With all these fantastic options, the construction industry is busy creating new housing, bikeways, or recreation facilities to support our growing city. We’ve got the scoop on some of the latest construction projects in the area.

Yaquina Hall Housing

The Salem Housing Authority and the City of Salem recently broke ground on a new construction project, Yaquina Hall Housing. Yaquina Hall will provide 52 apartments for people experiencing homelessness and people with serious mental illness. Work on this project began in 2016, but with funding, pandemic, and other delays, it’s finally underway and expected to be completed in 14 months.

2nd Street NW Design and Construction

Improvements to 2nd Street NW began in 2013 and continue today. The area was previously part of the Union Pacific Railroad until converted into a paved road by the West Salem Urban Renewal in 2013. The City of Salem is currently working with Century West Engineering to design the remainder of 2nd Street NW from Gerth Avenue NW to Wallace Road NW. Planned construction will include new sidewalks, lighting, and water and sewer upgrades to make the corridor safer and more pedestrian-friendly.

Geer Park Skate Park

The Geer Park Skate Park is coming soon, but not soon enough (2024!). The 44-acre park currently houses sports fields, a bikeway, and walking paths. Last fall, the city solicited survey responses about the future skate park design. Over 600 residents submitted feedback paving the way (pun intended!) for a community-based skatepark design. Evergreen Skateparks (link) will lead the design process. Having built skate parks worldwide, we’re excited to see what they will create for Salem!

Union Street NE Family Friendly Bikeway

As part of the 2019 Community Satisfaction Survey, Salem residents shared that they wanted improvements in walking and biking safety. Now there is a plan to increase the number of bike lanes on Union Street between Commercial Street NE and Summer Street NE. “Once construction is complete, an integral link in the bicycle system will be provided in downtown Salem that connects the 134-mile Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway, Wallace Marine Park, Riverfront Park, Minto Island Park, and the North Capital Mall.” (Cityofsalem.net)

We’re excited about all these construction projects. All of this new construction will make our great city even greater!
